Caring for your products

Simple care makes a real difference. Follow this guide to enjoy your T&J Scents products safely, protect your home and get the best from every fragrance.

Always start with your product label

The instructions and CLP information supplied with your exact product and fragrance take priority over general advice. Keep labels and packaging available for reference while the product is in use.

Wax melts

Enjoy consistent fragrance while protecting your warmer and surfaces.

How to use them

  • Use only in a purpose-made wax melt burner or warmer, following its manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Place the recommended amount in a clean, dry dish. Never add water, fragrance oil or other substances.
  • Do not overfill the dish. Wax becomes hot and liquid during use.
  • For a tea-light burner, use only the recommended size of unscented tea-light. For an electric warmer, use the correct power supply and do not cover it.

Changing the wax

  • Switch off or extinguish the heat source, then wait until the wax and burner are completely cool.
  • Remove solid wax gently using the method recommended for your particular burner. Never use a sharp blade.
  • Wipe the cool dish clean before adding a different fragrance.
Never leave a lit tea-light unattended. Keep burners upright on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from draughts, children, pets and anything that could catch fire.

Refill candles

A little care helps your candle burn more evenly and safely.

Before lighting

  • Make sure the correct refill is seated flat and securely in its compatible T&J Scents glass.
  • Place the glass upright on a stable, level and heat-resistant surface, away from draughts and flammable items.
  • Check that the glass is free from cracks, chips or other damage. Do not use damaged glassware.
  • Trim the wooden wick as described in the wooden-wick section below.

While burning

  • Keep the candle within sight and away from children and pets. Never move it while lit or while the wax is liquid.
  • Follow the maximum burn time stated on the product label; do not burn for longer.
  • Stop using the refill when the label instructs, or when approximately 10 mm of wax remains at the base. Never burn it completely dry.
The glass may become hot. Extinguish the flame and allow the candle, wax and glass to cool completely before touching or moving them.

Trimming a wooden wick

A short, clean wick encourages a calmer flame and cleaner burn.

Before every burn

  1. Make certain the candle and wax are completely cool and solid.
  2. Gently remove the loose, blackened tip with a wooden-wick trimmer or clean fingers.
  3. Leave approximately 5 mm of wick above the wax, unless the label states a different length.
  4. Remove all wick debris from the wax before lighting.
If the flame becomes unusually high, flickers repeatedly or produces visible smoke, extinguish it safely. Let everything cool, retrim the wick and check for draughts before relighting.

Safely removing a refill

Protect yourself and your reusable glass when it is time for a change.

ExtinguishMake sure the flame is fully out and the wick is no longer glowing.
Cool fullyWait until the wax, refill and glass have returned to room temperature.
Lift gentlyHold the glass securely and lift the refill straight out by its container or accessible edge—not by the wick.
Stop if stuckDo not force it. Contact T&J Scents for advice before trying another method.
Never use knives, screwdrivers or other sharp tools. Do not use boiling water, direct heat or sudden freezing: rapid temperature changes can damage glass. Fit only the correct T&J Scents refill designed for your glass.

Reed diffusers

Position and handle your diffuser carefully to enjoy it while protecting your home.

Setting up and caring for your diffuser

  • Place the bottle upright on a stable surface, using a protective coaster or tray. Diffuser liquid can mark painted, polished, plastic or porous surfaces.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight, radiators and other heat sources, which can increase evaporation. Keep well away from flames and ignition sources.
  • Use fewer reeds for a lighter fragrance or more reeds for a stronger fragrance, without overfilling the bottle.
  • If you choose to turn the reeds, do so carefully over a protected surface or sink. Avoid skin contact, wipe the bottle afterwards and wash your hands.
  • Wipe spills immediately and follow the care instructions for the affected surface. Do not place oil-soaked reeds directly onto furniture.
  • Never light the reeds, ingest the liquid or use it on skin. Keep the bottle and used reeds away from children and pets.
Do not pour leftover diffuser liquid into drains or outdoors. Check the CLP label and your local council’s guidance for safe disposal.

Safety information

Checking your CLP label

CLP means Classification, Labelling and Packaging. A CLP label communicates hazards associated with the specific fragrance mixture. Different scents—and different product types—can carry different information, so check every product rather than assuming the guidance is the same.

Depending on the classification, the label may include:

  • hazard pictograms;
  • a signal word such as “Warning” or “Danger”;
  • hazard and precautionary statements;
  • relevant sensitising ingredients or allergen information;
  • supplier and product-identification details.

Read the label before use, follow every precaution and keep it available until the product and any residue have been disposed of safely. Never transfer diffuser liquid or fragrance products into an unlabelled container.

If exposure or an accident occurs: move away from danger, follow the first-aid instructions on the product label and seek appropriate medical advice. Have the product and its label available. In an emergency call 999; for urgent medical advice in the UK contact NHS 111.

Common care questions

Can I put a candle refill into any glass?
No. Use a refill only with the compatible T&J Scents glass it was designed for. A different container may not withstand the heat or hold the refill securely.
Can I remove a refill while it is still warm?
No. Extinguish it and wait until the wax, refill and glass are completely cool and solid. Never pull a refill out by its wick.
Why is my wooden wick flame too large?
Extinguish the candle and let it cool completely. Remove the charred tip, trim the wick to approximately 5 mm and clear away debris. Also move the candle away from draughts. Do not relight if the glass or refill appears damaged.
Should I turn my diffuser reeds?
Turning reeds can refresh the fragrance, but it is optional. If you do it, protect the surrounding surface, avoid skin contact, wipe any drips and wash your hands afterwards.
Why does the CLP information differ between scents?
Each fragrance has its own formulation and classification. Always read the label supplied with that exact product and scent, even if you have used another T&J Scents fragrance before.
